Q
My AC isn’t working – what can I expect?

Q
Is it better to repair or replace?
AThis is a common question when your AC unit starts having issues. Not to worry – your Amtek service pro will explain the issues to you in detail and then provide you with all the information you need to make the decision that is best for you and your budget.
Q
Should I have my ducts cleaned?
AYes – this is a highly recommended service. It is not uncommon for a build up of unwanted contaminants to take over your air ducts. In addition to dust, air ducts frequently contain harmful contaminants and micro-organisms. These can include pet dander, bacteria, pollen, mildew, mold spores, and similar toxins – all of which can trigger breathing, allergy and sinus issues. In addition, any build up of grime in your ducts can result in a less than efficient AC system and higher energy costs.

Q
Why is it important to have regular maintenance on my home comfort system?
AYou wouldn’t buy a brand-new car and expect to never have to put air in the tires, change the oil and check out any unusual noises, would you? In the same way that an automobile requires periodic maintenance for optimal performance, a home comfort system should be regularly inspected by a qualified technician.
Q
How often should I have my Central A/C Unit Tuned Up?
AAll major air conditioning manufacturing companies recommend that you have your a/c unit tuned up every 6 months.
Q
What is a SEER?
AThere are special names for the efficiency ratings of various types of equipment. Air conditioning equipment is rated by the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating, or SEER. The higher the SEER rating, the more efficient the unit.
Q
Should a thermostat be set to “auto” or “on”?
APreferably auto. That way, the fan operates only when the temperature requires it. This is the most used and the most efficient setting. However, there are advantages to using the “on” setting. Air is constantly filtered through the unit’s air filter, and the constantly circulating air results in an even temperature throughout the house.
Q
Can shrubs or flowers be planted around an outdoor unit?
AYes. However, we recommend that plants be no closer than 18 inches to the unit. This allows for plenty of room for air circulation in and out of the unit. Without this room for air circulation, the unit could overheat, resulting in a premature need for service.
Q
How often do I need to clean/change my filter?
AYou should always double-check your owner’s manual for specific recommendations, but generally speaking it’s best to clean or change your filters once every 30 to 90 days. Remember, regular cleaning/changing of your filter will ensure the best filtration, increase the life of your machine, and give you peace of mind that you’re breathing easier.
Q
If an outdoor unit needs replacing, should the indoor unit be replaced too?
AYes. Central air conditioning and heating units are designed to operate as a complete, matched system. The efficiency rating is based on the entire system. Replacing the entire system ensures the system will be reliable and efficient.
